Yusef Salaam was a member of the "Central Park Five" who were convicted and imprisoned for the rape and beating of a jogger in New York City in 1989. He and the other four men were later exonerated by DNA evidence and received a financial settlement from the city. Salaam won a Democratic primary for a seat on New York's city council in 2023.
